Farm Focus: Oasis Garden

Lettuce at Oasis Garden

Oasis Garden is a 10-acre organic farm in the agricultural heart of Clovis.  Since 1999 they have been building their site upon the ideas of the Mokichi Okada Association, a group dedicated to improving quality of life by creating small prototypes of a world in harmony with nature, focusing on organic farming, art, and purification of the spirit and body.

Still in Season: Okra

Okra in Cast Iron

You know, we’re very fortunate to be living in the San Joaquin Valley.  We’re surrounded by some of the best farmland in the world and have a climate that allows an extended growing season.  Long after other areas of the country have been forced to move on, our farmers are able to continue planting and growing warmer weather crops.

Flavors of Fresno: Basturma

Basturma on Armenian Cheese Bread

I’ve heard Lahmajoun called “Armenian Pizza” before but check this out!  This is Armenian cheese bread that I topped with my favorite new discovery, a seasoned, cured meat called Basturma.  (It’s also spelled Pastirma or Bastirma or many other variations depending on what country is talking about it, but in the Armenian places in town I’ve most frequently seen it “Basturma.”)  Now that looks like pizza.  Granted, this probably isn’t anything that the people of Armenia would necessarily do with these ingredients but it sure was good.

IL Giardino Organico – an Introduction

Fri, 2011-09-09 04:00

Il Giardino Organico at The Vineyard Farmer's MarketOne of our favorite Farm Stands at The Vineyard Farmer’s Market sits in the corner of the west end of the arbor and is called IL Giardino Organico, “Organic Garden” in Italian.  They have been at The Vineyard since 1993, when they were “the oddball” stand, the only one selling certified organic food.    They feature European specialty produce, but that’s just scratching the surface of what this interesting and exciting group of farmers is doing!

Produce Stand at Vineyard Farmer's Market

If you haven’t been to The Vineyard Farmer’s Market, you are truly missing out on one of Fresno’s best places to get fresh, local produce.  Located on the corner of Blackstone and Shaw beneath a tall, vine-covered arbor, it is one of the great outlets for farm fresh goods in the area.  And there’s a lot to be had here, from stone fruit to grass-fed beef and everything between, with many certified organic options.

Flavors of Fresno: Lahmajoun

Thu, 2011-09-01 12:49

This week we started exploring and researching the culture and food of Fresno’s Armenian population.  Let me tell you, it’s been a good week so far!  There are a great variety of Armenian delis and markets in town, and that means it’s not hard to find great food from the region.  It also means that this is likely to be an ongoing investigation, and one we’re really going to enjoy!

Sweet Corn, Bacon, and Tomato Salad

Welcome back to Fresno Flavor!  One of our goals with this blog is to showcase the wonderful fresh ingredients we have available here in the San Joaquin Valley and to share recipe ideas to help you create easy meals at home using those ingredients.  Right now, we still have delicious local sweet corn available in Fresno.  It’s the end of the growing season, but if you hurry up, you’ll be able to enjoy this salad a couple of times before local corn is gone for the year!(...)

River Park Farmer’s Market

Wed, 2011-08-24 12:51

Eggplants at River Park Farmer's Market

Last night I visited the shops at River Park to take in the spectacle that is the River Park Farmer’s Market. It is by far the strangest backdrop I’ve seen for a fresh farm market (is that Victoria’s Secret back there?), but it’s much more than a produce market. It’s a street fair, a carnival, and a celebration of food in the style that I am quickly becoming accustomed to in this town. There were balloon-tying clowns, crafts, Parker (the Fresno Grizzlies mascot), a huge inflatable slide for the kids, BBQ stands, and, oh yeah, loads of beautiful, fresh produce.(...)
